I have to add a little 'P.S.' to my above comment...I do disagree with the over-the-top costumes that make little girls look like sexed-up vamps. I think that is totally wrong and even feel a bit guilty watching the show, as I do not agree with anything that pushes little girls to grow up too fast or to parade them around like that when there are pedophiles watching the show. I just love clean, well-executed, beautiful dance routines but NOT when the girls are forced to wear too-adult costumes or when they are performing some moves that are blatently sexual. I do think that is abuse and is wrong. When that happens on this show or any dancing show, I change the channel. There should be absolute rules in that industry regarding children and what they wear and some restrictions on the dance moves. That may sound odd to some, but it's how I feel.

I stumbled upon 'Dance Moms' as I was channel-surfing one night. I love any kind of dance program (DWTS-yes!) and all kinds of dance; my husband says I have an inner dancer, acrobat, and cheerleader that is dying to come out. lol. Anyhoo, I was, at first, turned off by Abby. But the program pulled me in and the more I watched it, I can see Abby's inner soft side and that's a good thing. Too much harshness-constantly-would be almost abusive to the girls and a real turn-off to watch. But she is intriguing. Plus, I love to watch the girls' routines. *However, I came upon this site by typing in, "Is Dance Moms for real?" because, the more one watches it, the more you can see it is heavily scripted. The 'Candy Apple' leader is way over the top; the brusque way Abby treats Nia is just a little too heavily played-out-are we ever going to drop this mostly imagined racism crap? And the little scenarios they play out between the moms and the girls is just too..."too". If you know what I mean. But guess what? I still watch it! So, Lifetime, keep it up. You have committed viewers out there, who get pulled in by either the drama or the beautiful dance (for me, it's all about the dance). Thanks for letting me vent! And yes, I agree with the blogger of this site, it's obviously set up heavily. But who cares? Abby is great and I am pulled in by her and by the wonderful routines the girls do. Keep it up!

I think that it is unscripted up until the part where the girls get individually interviewed. That part is FAKE with a capital "F"

This video series is very well done. If people are trying to conceive, Julia Indichova offers wonderful support through her books and website - either an alternate or enhancement to medicated fertility treatment and supportive of alternate methods of forming a family.

A lot of parents subject his or her children to strict coaches. Just because it's dance, suddenly people go "politically correct" and start pointing out that this is outrageous. It has always been there on the competitive plane though. If this were a show about soccer, swimming, lacrosse, etc. we wouldn't think a thing about it. It's just a coach doing his or her job, but because dance isn't recognized widely by the "athletic world," Abby Lee is out of place for being so demanding. The girls dancing at ALDC have aspirations to be on Broadway or to become a Rockette or to do another form of professional dance. I'm fairly certain Michael Phelps's dad, Tom Brady's dad, or any other professional athlete's parents didn't say "Okay, after 1 hour of practice you can call it a day." when these athletes were just kid. To be the best, you have to practice as the best. Yes, Abby isn't the PCA Double Goal coach we have grown used to this day in age, but she is an excellent coach knowing what she wants for her and her dancers. As a lacrosse coach of elementary aged girls, I fully sympathize with Abby. I have players who want to play in college, and by the time the girls get into the college selection process, the pool for scholarships is going to be deeper. Fundamentals MUST be learned early on if you want to go big time.

Basically, yes the show is scripted to add to a more dramatic plot, but to act like this is a new phenomenon and completely fake is simply ignorant.

Abbey and Cathy said in an interview that they are actually very good friends, and that the whole bee costume thing and the fighting is not real. Here's the link to the video:

i believe some of it may be scripted simply because of candy apples...cathy is ridiculous and i don't think any human would make themselves look that stupid on national tv. but cgerry...i have to disagree.. because the moms keep then there doesn't mean it is scripted..i grew up in a studio like abby lee...that is the life of a dancer. abby lee is actually nice compared to some of the instructors out there. yes i understand they are young children but she sees the talent they have and she is only preparing them for ugly in their future of dance. the moms may hate abby but they know how much their children love dance and they know abby can get them far in life.

I know for a fact its scripted. Let me tell you why-. A friend of mine hhas her kids going to stuudio 19(a dance stuudio Kendall went to before abbbyys) Kendall comes vback all thhe time and tells us how shhe hhas to learn hher lines. And she didn't rreally go to "candty apples". Shhe was actuuallyy still dancing withh abbby. And all thhe moms are actually so nice. They are grown women. Thhey don't fight like thhat. And they are actually horrible dancers thheyy go to lower competitions to make tggem look better
Kendall wants to quit but thjeyy wont let hher out of the contract until the seasons over.. I'm being 100% hhonest.
