What Women Did in Online Video in 2011

2011 felt like a bad a case of PMS– moody weather, protests, desperation, and general unpredictable bitchiness. But as it comes to a close, I thought I’d remind you of some of the nifty online videos us ladies have produced this year, as 2011 brings us a shift in the world of web television… especially for women.

Of course, there is Downsized, the first Digital Chick TV original series created by moi, which tackles the financial malaise within this country.

Broad City, the hilariously original series created by and starring Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson, announced a TV deal with FX for 2012. The show has paved the way for several smart female comedy series out of NY, including Missed Connection, SRSLY, and The Actress.

Out With Dad from Jason Leaver returned for a second season with some very poignant episodes about a teenage girl coming out. This powerful episode tackles homophobia in high school.

Funny Or Die parodied Nurse Jackie.

Ragged Isle, the beautifully female-led noir from Barry Dodd, wrapped its first season with a cliff-hanging whammy. It’s thankfully returning in 2012!

Ragged Isle is now available exclusively at http://www.sfntv.com/.

Politically incorrect comedy The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl created by and starring Issa Rae became a bonafide mega-hit, hitting colleges and blowing up on social media.

Susan Miller (Anyone But Me) and CJP Media brought us the dramedy Bestsellers about a multi-generational all-female book club and the issues they face in their professional lives. This episode is one of my personal favorites — it’s about ageism.

Pretty, the mostly female series from Steve Silverman, returned for Season 3 of the child beauty pageant parody, chock full of female soap stars like Genie Francis and Martha Byrne.

Key of Awesome parodied Adele.

Beloved TV writer Jane Espenson and web sensation Cheeks brought us a comedy about gay marriage, Husbands.

Another Buffy alum Emma Caulfield, along with Karri Bowman and Camilla Rantsen, hit the web with their parody of celeb reality, Bandwagon.

Indie Intertube, the hit podcast devoted to web series from April Grant and Amanda Shockley, went streaming in a new live Sunday night series for Mingle Media TV.

The socially conscious relationship comedy Then We Got Help from Julie Ann Emery returned for a second season of arguably incompetent couples therapy. (I make a guest appearance in this episode.)

The friendship comedy Fumbling Thru the Pieces from creator Julie A. Smith with OLTL’s Hillary B. Smith (they are not related for those wondering) and Girl Parts’ Kelsey Robinson wrapped its first season.

Julia Ahumada Grob and Yamin Segal tackled gentrification in the comedy EastWillyB, focusing on the latino neighborbood of Bushwick, Brooklyn.

Tina Cesa Ward (Anyone But Me) returned for another dramatic series, Good People in Love, and brought along some of DCTV’s favorite actresses Rachael Hip-Flores and Renee Olbert.

The ensemble drama Breaking Point from Caryn K. Hayes brought some addictive heat to the web.

And lastly, Felicia Day was back for the fifth season of The Guild. You know, that little show with the Microsoft deal you may have heard of… (An episode from Season 4 is embedded.)

And there was so much more. Let’s keep it up in 2011!
