Goddess Circle (Beauty): Karen- How to Find the Perfect Shade of Red Lipstick

It’s wedding season, which means it’s time for some GLAMOUR. Here are some great tips from make-up artist Karen Cecilia on how to find the perfect shade of red lipstick for your next affair.

It’s pure glamour. Red is “it” for the season. Women want to find the perfect shade of that rapturous color. All makeup artists will agree that everyone can wear red. You just have to find a shade that works with your skin tone.

First let’s break down the undertones of red shades. There is the PINK RED (this is a cool red,) think of the color of cherries. Next, there is the ORANGE RED (this is a warm red,) think of a tomato. Also, there is the TRUE RED. With equal parts orange and pink in it, it’s like a stop sign. Additionally, there is the BRICK RED. This is literally like the color of a brick, a red with more of a brown undertone. This shade of red fits mostly everyone.

To determine the best undertone of red, first look at your skins undertones. If you have a little rosy hue to your skin (usually this includes fair skinned people) than you would be considered a warm skin tone. If you have a golden or olive skin tone than you would be considered a cool skin tone. Now you can choose a red that is the same as your skin tone for a more natural red. Or the other option is go opposite your skin tone for a more dramatic effect. Always be sure to coordinate your other makeup along with your tones. All cool or all warm. This will ensure that your makeup looks polished.

Now that you have that all figured out, there are texture options. You have a sheer red that’s glossier and your natural lip color hints through. Then you have a creme with full color, moisture and a subtle shine. Then there is a matte formulation. No shine and a dryer formula for longer wear. And the newest texture: longwear. Some companies make a 12-hour option. Great for a night out with no worry or if your lips tend to bleed lipstick.

Whatever red lipstick you wear, wear it with confidence and know that you are among the most glamorous women in history when you paint your lips red.
