One of the things I love about web television is the power of socially relevant shows, shows that probably would not be made in mainstream media without a high dose of dilution. These shows not only get made in web television but they usually find a strong, excited, loyal audience.
I discovered comedy East WillyB (as in East Williamsburg, Brooklyn) through a twitter conversation on diversity in web television, and I then watched the entire first season in one highly amused sitting. This quirky, comedic micro-series, which premiered in April, takes a look at the struggle of the Latino urban community in Bushwick as the area becomes more “gentrified”. Will Willy Jr.’s Sports Bar be able to survive amongst a neighborhood of hipsters? Created by Julia Ahumada Grob and Yamin Segal, EastWillyB features an ensemble cast of top NYC latino TV/film actors.
