Back in October, DCTV ran a piece listing the current crowd-source funding campaigns for female-centric online projects, and we thought it was time for an update! Here are some picks for what you should be investing in!
Your Taste: Showtime, HBO; sophisticated, satirical dramedy like Weeds, Nurse Jackie, and Hung
Of course, we can’t forget our first DCTV production! Written and directed by DCTV Creative Director Daryn Strauss, Downsized is a critically acclaimed made-for-the-web dramedy compared to “Up in the Air” and “Crash”. An Official Selection at the Cologne Conference in Germany along with HBO’s Treme and AMC’s Mad Men and nominated as Clicker’s Best Comedy (Serial) in 2010, the show follows interconnected stories of several characters from different financial and cultural backgrounds as they adjust to lifestyle changes during the economic crisis.
Offering a variety of incentives for different levels of contributions including behind-the-scenes access, associate producer credit and a walk-on role, Downsized will also be the first of many original online productions for Digital Chick TV. In 2011, Digital Chick TV endeavors to bring online audiences a series of smart, sophisticated, character-driven online video that highlights contemporary issues facing both women and men.
There are only 2 weeks left to contribute, so don’t wait!

And here are our other picks:
INCREDIBLE GIRL (sexual awakening short)

Your Taste: films/shows with sexual awakening themes like Fur, The Piano, and The L Word
Created by Aurora de Blas, Incredible Girl is a coming of age short focusing on female empowerment with same sex themes. Originating from a blog post, de Blas decided to turn it into a film to inspire people to be more “bad-ass.” They are offering incentives such as exclusive updates, a DVD, digital download of an original song, and associate producer credit. Also, Incredible Girl has a fiscal sponsorship, so your contributions are tax deductible.

AWKWARD EMBRACES (romantic comedy)

Your Taste: Romantic Comedy, Dating, Awkward Humor, Geekdom, The Guild, He’s Just Not That Into You, Never Been Kissed
Created and starring the adorable, relatable Jessica Mills, Awkward Embraces follows the romantic life of a self-proclaimed geek. I like to think of Jess as Drew Barrymore for the web. Season 1 of Awkward Embraces was not only written up in the New York Times but also was a Best Comedy (Serial) pick by Clicker.com in their Best of 2010. Plus, Jessica is the author of our motivational column for the low-to-no budget producer, 10 Keys to Running the Show Without Losing Your Marbles, and is lending her geektasticness to DCTV’s brother, OMFGeek, so support her and her cute, geeky, funny-as-hell self!

Your Taste: Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Lost
The paranormal drama, Cyphers, seeks to send you on a character-driven mindbender revolving around physiological and psychic phenomenon. With a cast of strong actors from New Mexico, creator/star Debrianna Mansini has made a point of creating meaty opportunities for women and men who are over 35. Mansini worked with her castmembers to develop characters that would stretch them as actors and also represent female strength. This dramatic series is seeking funds to finance its season finale and begin production for its second season.
