We Have To Stop Now follows Dyna and Kit, a couple who decides to put an end to their bitter attempts at couples therapy and finally get a divorce. Problem is: somewhere along the way, they managed to co-write a #1 NY Times Bestseller, How to Succeed in Marriage Without Really Trying, which makes divorcing a bit complicated. And add to that, they now have a reality TV crew trailing them.
A quiet, realistic and witty dramedy with believable performances by Cathy DeBuono (Out At the Wedding, Chicago Hope) and Jill Bennett (And Then Came Lola, Logo’s Rick & Steve) as the put-upon couple and Suzanne Westenhoefer (the first openly gay comic in the US) as their beleaguered therapist, the show plays on what it takes to “succeed in marriage”. And for the record, it involves “trying.” The problems in Dyna and Kit’s marriage are relatable to anyone who has fought to sustain a relationship, regardless of your sexuality. Imagine In Treatment if it dated Modern Family and then got pissed at their annoying habits.
The show launched the first season in early 2009, which is now only available on DVD (for purchase and on Netflix). However, a recap, trailer and various special features are available online for free. Their 16-episode second season, which features an hilarious guest star appearance by Meredith Baxter as the girls’ new therapist and 2 hours of scripted video content, is available online but only by subscription. (For the record: I watched both seasons, and they’re good.)
